San Diego, named after Saint Didacus (Spanish: Diego de Alcalá), is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest city in California, after Los Angeles, with a population of 1,376,173 (Jan 2010) within its administrative limits on a land area of 372.1 square miles (963.7 km2). The urban area of San Diego extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of 2,880,000. Also, this is part of a megalopolis (the San Diego and Los Angeles metropolitan areas) with a population of about 22 million. It is located on the Pacific Ocean at the southernmost end of the west coast of the continental United States.
The three largest sectors of San Diego's economy are defense, manufacturing, and tourism, respectively.
By 1990 several corporate headquarters had left San Diego. Through a spokesperson, Mayor of San Diego Maureen O'Connor said that the losses of corporate headquarters "has nothing to do with San Diego per se as much as the overall business climate."
There are San Diego companies that develop wireless cellular technology. Qualcomm was founded and is headquartered in San Diego; Qualcomm is the largest private-sector technology employer (excluding hospitals) in San Diego County. According to the San Diego Business Journal, the largest software company in San Diego is security software company Websense Inc. There are more than 400 biotechnology companies.
The economy of San Diego is influenced by its port, which includes the only major submarine and shipbuilding yards on the West Coast, as well as the largest naval fleet in the world. Due to San Diego's military influence, several major national defense contractors were started and are headquartered in San Diego, including General Atomics, Cubic and NASSCO.
